He ignored large parts of his National Guard obligation.

He had no steady job before age 40.

He's vacationed more than any sitting U.S. President.

No wonder "It's hard work" is his excuse for the unholy quagmire in Iraq.

Bush look awkward and rambling, not clear on the point he started or finished.

I love how Kerry thinks we need to get the world behind us when we go to war or have to protect our nation.

Essentially that is like Kerry saying if someone breaks into your house and threatens to KILL your kids you should run over to the neighbor’s house and see if they are okay with you taking matters into your own hands.

Kerry's plan is different from George Bush's plan. Gee, that was insightful Mr. Senator. I think that just kind of leaves some of us wanting actual answers from this guy. He let Bush make him look like a fool.

I hope for his sake he shows some sign of life in at least one of the next two debates or he is going to get crushed in the election.

GLOBAL TEST ? Is that Kerry's version of the SAT ?

You knew a Republican would come along sooner or later. Listen, you're using an availabilty heuristic (I know this is a big term and perhaps you're not acquainted with it, but... suck it up, there's probably a lot of words you don't know). Defending our country is NOTHING AT ALL like defending your own house. Now, clearly, if someone attacks you in your home, you kill them. Kerry would never disagree. If someone is in America and wants to kill you, you kill them. Again, wouldn't disagree. What he disagrees with, is deciding ahead of time who is going to attack your house before they've even done it or anyone has any proof that they would, and killing them. That's what bush did. And it's a tad on the scary side. Kerry is saying, if we're going to be on the "offensive", we sure as hell better know what we're doing, and have the world backing us up, so we're not 90% of the casualties. Any of your friends died in Iraq yet, bushboy? If not, shut the fuck up right now, for you have not the slightest idea what life will be like when your favorite hombre decides to take on Iran. And he will. And you and yours will die. Trust me. I know.

Whoah there Repug boy! You must have seen a different debate. "Trans-shipment of information" yeah, indeed Bush made Kerry look sooooo bad. In case you are unaware, "Trust me" and "I know" and "it is hard work" a foreign policy make not. A commander in chief who sends our sons and daughters to die for a massive fuck up and has the gall to tell us how hard it is and how he understands because he sees it on tv. What the fuck happened to this country, how did we end up with this functional idiot in the white house?

It is sure is hard work when you spend 40% of your time playin cowboy back in Crawford. I mean I only get to work like 11 months of the year... Bush's work year is even shorter than the average school year (9 months) by almost 2 whole months! And this buffoon has the gall to say what hard work is? There should be a rule that made sure that a person's first real job was not President of the United States.

Like father like son, one term and they're done. What a collection of evil maggots. Hard work? This retard would not know what hard work is even if it hit him in the head with a clue stick.

Hands down Kerry. Bush was totally unprepared, knowing full well what Kerry was going to attack his policy making decisions. Bush looking into audience with those scamming eyes and coming back with only a campaign sound bite made me wonder if he had any preparation at all, but then I relized he probably did but he was to dumb to remember any of this preparation training he had. When he left his sound bites for conversational issues he wanted to express to the audience he sounded like he couldn't put together a two-three syllable word while leaning on the podium like a drunken sailor does leaning on the bar. My wife thought it was personal, but I thought it was very un-presidential .

I lost a friend at the WTC on 9/11. He worked at WNET, taking care of Ch. 13's transmitter. It was good to go after the people who paid for that attack. But the folks who are running the US Government walked away from the war against those people who caused the 9/11 attacks, and redirected the resources against a country who had nothing to do with 9/11. And have so far wasted 1100 lives and $200 billion of OUR money. And we still have not brought the people of caused 9/11 to justice.
If Bush is not at fault, then who is? His subordinates? If so, where does the buck stop? Who is running this show?

Nevertheless, it looked to me like a yellowbellied lying stumblebum was confronted by an articulate, intelligent, clear thinking, courageous combat veteran who forced the jerks face into the "deer in the headlights" look of confusion over and over.

The only thing missing was a clear plan to get the hell out of the mess Bush and company have started us into. I'd just put the troops on busses and trucks, wish the Iraqis well, go to the sea and leave. The oil will still be there no matter what they do to one another, and we can still buy it.

I don't think people understand what Kerry meant with the global test bit. See, this is how Bush may win, because everyone looks at how someone else interprets his words. Granted, I'm doing the same, but I think I understand what he's talking about. I posted it on my blog, but I'll repeat it here."Kerry was articulating long-standing U.S. policy that asserts the right to launch a pre-emptive strike but recognizes the need to back up such a move by facts and present those to allies." Presenting facts to the people, even the Americans. The one thing Bush failed to do. No Facts, only his lies. And over 1000 Americans died.

Clinton said in the debates against Bush's father about how in the new world order we found ourselves in we will help democracy where it's wanted. Insurgents show us that the Iraq's don't understand Democracy. Bush and Rumsfield have shown they don't like true democracy. They stated that a flawed election in Iraq is better than no election. Why do they feel this way? Because it was a flawed election that gave them their jobs.

On a final note. I have been doing some research on Allawi, and he's already committing war crimes, this is the man that Bush is so behind?

These idiotic media whores (are these people college educated?), whenever they analyze the debates, they divide it into “Substance” and “Style”. Well…Style is the cut of your suit, the color of your tie, your hair and makeup. What they call Style is really Behavior, and Behavior is what goes to the very core of character And Substance. They should be talking about Verbal Actions versus Physical Actions, and physical actions are what reveal the truth, whatever the words being said. I’m also sick of hearing people say that Debating Skills are no indicator that you would be a good President. Right… being able to understand the issues, make convincing arguments, and generally express oneself, are not important for the leader of the free world.

"Any of your friends die during the 9/11 attacks, Kerry-boy?"

are you prone to tell us then, that using the death of innocent people is suitable attack on another politician or political stance, JUST like bush did in his commercials using 9/11 as a gimmick? There's freedom for you (said over 37 times to boot by bush.)

Look, attacking kerry isn't going to change the fact bush lost terribly. It's like attacking someone playing a video game for getting hit once after nailing his opponent into unconsciousness. Yes I know using a video game is a weak comparison but I think it fits an equally weak debate. Kerry didn't need to speak, infact all he did by speaking was give bush ammunition for flip flopping (the insult given to changing your mind, something I wish our president was capable of doing, y'know, thinking things more thoroughly after making a decision.)

Yes, I know individuals who have lost things from 9/11, from someone living in new york I feel I actually have a right to speak about it too as opposed to many would be kids who just get into a tyrade because it can be used for their political advantages. That was a horrible event, and our president bumbled /protecting/ our country like he bumbled his debate. He says there was no way to stop those attacks, but he seems quite confident and adamant we can win a war against an unfaced group in a country we have no right to be in (which is why we need a 'global test', you see, global test really refers to getting permissions from other countries. If we don't get permission from other countries, why, what's to stop people from thinking of bush as this man -- http://esperantonord.free.fr/cdrom/allemagne/allemagne/hitler.jpg ?) The fact is, we went after saddam for recklessness, ability to kill others for his own gains, and misleading his people and using them for shields

http://www.unknownnews.net/casualties.html I don't know if that site's statistics are 100% correct, but given the rough guidelines, don't you think that's a bit too many people left injured or dead based on a hunch saddam may have attacked us or something to do with it? What does any of this have to do with the debates? Bush walked into something and failed miserably, and the debates were proof he's capable of doing this.

(apologies to the moderators of blogger if posting links is against the rules, I simply needed to stress the points spoken to show my point of view and felt links would help it; and I felt actual fact would help to remove this stupid flame war about who's better and bring it back to the real issue -- bush is pretty damn funny on live camera.)

In response to the comment:

The only thing missing was a clear plan to get the hell out of the mess Bush and company have started us into. I'd just put the troops on busses and trucks, wish the Iraqis well, go to the sea and leave. The oil will still be there no matter what they do to one another, and we can still buy it. ...Anybody disagree?

I completely disagree with this statement, and from what he said I believe that John Kerry does as well. What Kerry said is that we must win the peace in Iraq. George W. Bush entered us into the "wrong war at the wrong time". But now that America has taken the action to attack Iraq, remove it's ruler, destroy some of it's infrastructure in the process, and leave it weak and vulnerable, it is America's responsibility to help clean up the mess it made.

Note that Kerry mentioned winning the peace, not, as W. said, the war. Once our soldiers were committed, we can't just truck them out and leave Iraq alone. I support all the efforts our soldiers are making to create a peace in Iraq, I just happen to think that the orders sending them there were the wrong orders. That doesn't diminish my respect for our men and women on the ground, who have all of my support when they follow lawful orders.

It's also obvious that the Iraqi people don't want an extended American presence in their country. Yes, we removed a heinous man from power, and the people of Iraq have the ability now to be better off. How do we let them move forward? By providing the support they need for them to take control of their own country. You can't expect infrastructure run by an iron fist to immediately recreate a decent management structure overnight. In many ways, what Iraq needs is mentoring.

I submit that, given the way America entered Iraq, our troops may not be in the best position to be trusted as mentors. A better solution, in my mind, is to recruit other members of the international community to take over that mentoring role. American troops will still be needed for military operations, but, as the Iraqi people begin to take more control of their own destiny and defence, fewer American troops will be needed. Also, troops from other countries, as peacekeeping forces, would be useful to take over secutiry, being less of a target.

So, having chopped off the head of an evil regime, America is now responsible for keeping the country that was under that regime alive. And the best way to do that is to enlist help from other countries, removing our troops as possible, and using this troop reduciton as a public method of showing that we don't have long term designs on Iraq. But without that foreign support, we can't start the troop reduction.

If I'm not mistaken, this is exactly what John Kerry is saying we should do. We're in the wrong war at the wrong time, but given that we are in the war, we need to win the peace. Anything less will cause America to lose more respect with the rest of the world, and win us more enemies who are likely to continue to hate America.

George W. Bush keeps taking about fighting the war on terror. John Kerry has a plan for ending the war on terror by winning the peace. That's why I suppot John Kerry.

Hey Republican(s) with the high-falutin vocab --

Whoah... wait. Since when does agreeing with Bush, the Republicans or the "War on Terror" have ANYTHING to do with whether or not someone supports the troops overseas, mourns the loss of life during 9/11 and the Iraq war or celebrate the removal of Saddam Hussein?

America is a place of choice. Of paths. It's always the path that we concentrate on. We could have total world peace if all were run under an iron fist. No dissent tolerated. My concern, as has been many, MANY others, is how we've gained these things in recent history. Two wrongs have never made a right. Should we use a lesser wrong to pursue a greater wrong? Are lies valid when they remove criminals from the streets?

We're talking a means to an end here. Those parts of history that show humanity in its darkest light are the parts in which men decided the ends justified the means.

An important thing to point out is that Bush never fully rejected the claim that he started the war for oil and used 9/11 as a distraction. He just kept saying his catch phrases "hard work" and "freedom" like they were supposed to quell our suspicions.

The point he did make was that if we are against the war, we are discouraging the soldiers, and that is all. Not that we are against the fundamental reasons for going ("freedom" et al), but that we are discouraging the soldiers. From the arguments he made, this means that he acknowledges that the war was based on illigitimate grounds, but "shh, be quiet, lets not tell the troops that. They might not want to be there anymore."

Well no shit, Mr. Prez!!! if I were a soldier I would not want to spend my life to reduce a suburban mom's SUV fuel by 3 cents a gallon. If kerry wants to garner the undecided vote, he had better be more adamant about letting the truth be known.

Cooking the books to justify invading a foreign country, that was not ANY threat to the US, that's a reason good enough for at least impeachment. Clinton was almost impeached for lying about something that was not any business of people outside of his family. G.W. caused more than 1000 deaths of our soldiers, thousands injured US soldiers, tens of thousands foreign citizens murdered or injured. On top of that the whole world turned away from the US and wants nothing to do with the US while G.W. is still in the house. The only thing that Muslim world is dreaming about is how to get back at the US. And that's a matter of time till they find a way to do that. That can potentially cause US a river of blood for many years ahead. It was not in the US interest to invade Iraq. It was in the interest of G.W., his family and the crooks like Dick Ch. surrounding them. G.W. is a mass murderer who should be charged for his crimes and betrayal of his country. The way he talks is the way he represents the US and takes care of you as your president. Mass murders of his fellow citizens, ruining thousands of lives of US solders families and potentially tens of thousands if not millions of lives of US citizens in the future because of the policies of G.W. are the reasons good enough at least for impeachment and criminal trial.

Global test and housebreakers:

Sure you can kill an intruder, but you'd better be able to prove, to the police and/or in court, that he was an intruder. In other words you have to justify it after the fact. If you paid attention to what Kerry said, he used the past tense in talking about what he would do to show the world we were right. You can pre-empt (heck under the US constitution that's the only justification for a state to wage war on its own without approval from Congress) buy you have to be able to justify what you did after the fact.

To go back to Bush's situation in Iraq, you can't even show that Saddam was a housebreaker, instead of just a houseguest you decided you wanted to kill. Heck, the guy wasn't even in our house and had no ability to be in our house. It's like going across town to kill someone and then claiming he was thinking of coming over and bothering you, even though he had no ability to cross town.

Meanwhile, the guy who did break into our house and killed several thousand people is laughing his ass off in Tora-Bora.

Bush is a putz. How can anyone support him?

plus he's done thousands of things flat out wrong and/or immoral

I am 25 years old, I live in the United States, and I am not registered to vote. I don't care if that matters to anyone or not. I have not seen the debate in its entirety, which to some people probably disqualifies my intentions to comment on this issue. I can't agree with Democrats and I can't agree with Republicans. Therefore, I don't agree with either canidate. I don't know if it's the media or the majority of the population in America, but I have close to no idea what any third party stands for. I make my own decisions in life so I feel compelled to at least say a few things, be relevant or not, here (feel free to interpret them any way you want). I hate the idea of war. I think world peace is asking for too much. Nothing will ever be perfect. And I couldn't care any less what other countries think of me or the country I was born, raised and will die in. I am a proud American. But I don't trust politicians. I absolutely hate the idea of injecting fear into people. I'm not an agressive person. I believe in keeping all of my money that I earn. I believe hard work pays off if you actually work for it. I think welfare is one of the the worst ideas ever. My goal in life, however, isn't about amassing as much money as fast as I can so I can retire as soon as I can. There are more important things in life than oil.
This is the most I've said about politics ever. And it feels good to do it anonymously. Thanks.

The previous comment is a sad comment on the state of political involvement - or lack thereof.

It's quite a shame to see people so patently removed from the democratic process - a process that millions have people died trying to preserve.

You claim you're a proud American, but then readily admit you've never voted. Odd. If you're not happy with your present predicament, do something about it. Vote, and get involved in the process instead of whining about it from the sidelines.

I'm ashtonning how is it possible the Americans are represented by a so stupid man.

It's obvious that the man has no ideas at all, 4 years after. How is st possible in the XXI Century ?

American is becoming relegated to a Country where a dummy can reach presidency, like Uganda with Idi Amin or Russia with the drunk Ieltsin.

This what we see from Europe.

I think our unregistered 25 year-old friend illustrated a point though. There is a visceral need in most americans to be rewarded for work, hard or otherwise. Why invest in things that will yield nothing? Why support those that contribute nothing, or have no promise of eventually giving back something? In an average week, I'll buy a sandwich or water for one or two panhandlers (never money). I do this in the hope it will get them through another day and eventually off the street. Yeah, a stretch, I know.

So... here we have a President who, to many, looks like he was handed his own election through nefarious means, handed his various career posts, handed immunity from ever coming close to giving his life for our country, and no need to dialogue with the American people. A part of politics is... well... putting on a show. A leader rallies the troops, so we'd expect a modicum of speaking talent and attempt to inspire us. That is a part of what a leader should do. Our President appeals to certain segments of society, but he does not speak to the American people in general. There's no attempt to do so. That's the way it seems.

I've used the word "seems" here because it is quite possible Bush is some kind of Machiavelli genius behind the scenes. Well, maybe. Wh-- at any rate, my point is that Bush is quite possibly the complete OPPOSITE of our last President. Therein lies his problem.

Clinton was both the greatest and worst thing to ever befall and grace his political party. An incredibly intelligent man, well-read, an on-his-feet thinker and an interacter -- the Man For The Age. In his speeches, he would appeal to our better nature and in his personal encounters with individuals, he would engage and show a genuine interest.

And then he got himself a BJ and made a few bad personal and political moves.

Does any of the above describe Bush? No. I'd say not. Many don't trust him, fear Ashcroft and wonder what the hell his Administration is going to do next. Much of what he has done has appealed to our darker nature, not the better. He's divided, obfuscated, finger-pointed and ignored.

So, an unregistered voter, a disillusioned young person, an American seeing those tenets we've been raised to believed forged this country trashed, I understand why. What we've got to do is tell the rest of the world this coming November that we're genuine to our nature; that we won't reward what doesn't represent us. So, 25 year-old unregistered voter, GO REGISTER AND TURN YOUR BELIEF INTO ACTION! If not for yourself, do it for us.

This would be a most excellent Horatian satire if it weren't so damn real. That five-minute clip was really funny, and SNL couldn't have done better (or did they?), but sadly, Bush could be on his way to the white house again, and this time, I don't think the world will forgive our arrogance or shortsightedness. When W was elected the last time, I held my breath and prayed we'd make it through all right, and we did, sort of. But please, please don't let it happen again. We get the government we deserve, and if the majority goes with Bush, God help us, because judging from Bush's fuck-the-world-I-don't-give-a-shit-what-anyone-else-thinks-goddammit-attitude, no one else will. Truly, winnning back the trust and confidence of other nations will be a hell of a lot of hard work.

Just another sad example of the man's idiocy and inability to be honest with the American people.

This is a man who says John Kerry flip-flops while he said "I don't know where bin Laden is and I don't care, he's not our priority" 6 months after 9-11. This is a man who passes "environmental" legislation that undoes all environmental regulations: we've got paper waste flowing into the Patomac for Christ's sake! (forgive me, Big Guy). This is a guy who ignored evidence of a potential terroist threat gathered by CLINTON administarion officials until 9-11. And this is just the tip of the iceberg of all the shit the administrations' pulled.

I'll admit that Kerry isn't the best pick for president, but given Bush's track record, anyone is better than Bush.

And shame on you Republicans too loyal to your party affiliation to admit the irreparable damage inflicted by this administration.

From an outsider looking in, the whole US democracy seems a joke. How the so called 'greatest country in the world' can elect an idiot like Bush in the first place is incredible. Millions of dollars in dodgy backroom deals seem to go into a US election campaign and it would seem to me that the US is about the worst example of a democracy in the world.

America, WAKE UP, you have an idiot in control of your country, your whole election process is completely corrupt and your civil rights are slowly being peeled away from you "in the name of stopping terrorism". Why aren't you out on the streets protesting?, don't you see it?, are you blinded by the media spin? America is seen as a joke by the rest of the world, but nobody dares say anything in case the US cuts off trade or decides that your country is the next Iraq. Where is the US when it comes to Korea, Korea have said they have weapons of mass destruction and that they are prepared to use them but America doesn't give a shit, and why would that be, simple, Korea doesn't have any oil.
Wake up America, your under the control of a fool who is taking you all to be fools.

Hi, I've got a question for all of you american guys, how did you let this stuttering fool get to the Oval Office in the first place? I know he didn't get the majority of the votes, but you've got to stand up for yourselves, revolt, strike, demand a fair election, "We have to accept this error", fuck that. Anyway, don't make the same mistake twice. Get rid of him. I'm not saying this just for you but for me and the rest of the world too. I'm from the Netherlands, and our prime minister is so far up your presidents ass that he'd take anything from him. Bush once adressed our prime minister by "friend", simply because the forgot his name. And our prime minister took it. We've got soldiers in Iraq, Why? I don't know, because your president asked. So for the sake of us and the world, get Bush out of the white house. Dont know 'bout Kerry, but it's got to better than Bush.

On a side note... this is funny I just thought of this. Remember how Kings of the past would ride into battle to defend his country? I just think it is weird that so many people are saying, "yay, go Bush war!" and will send others to die for the cause... but not themselves. I think this shows the materialistic and frivolous view we Americans have on war. This may sound even stupider... but... I know, everyone is against the draft, but just think about reinstating it for a minute. If the war were worthy enough, no one would have a problem being drafted. If the war were stupid, no one would want to go. Quite simple. I am tired of cowards hiding while others go do the dirty work that supposedly we all believe in. If we all believe in it... we all should go... even the president. There are plenty of smart people left to run the country in his absence. If that is what it came to.
I know the above scenario is unrealistic, but maybe thinking something like this out loud will help us think about our individual perspectives on war. Later everyone. Oh, and the reason I said, “this is funny” above, is because I imagined Bush dressing up and going to war in Iraq…maybe not so funny but I giggled.

Hi, I like to read your comments. At least there are some smart and educated guys around in the USA. At the 2000 elections people in my country, The Netherlands, already didn't believe Dubya would be a competent president. In those days some 90% of the Dutch people would have voted for Al Gore. Well, our worst nightmares became true during this presidency. How can we ever trust American intelligence in the future? Take the Colin Powell multimedia PPT presentation in the Security Council for example, just two months before the so-called coalition of the willing rushed into the war, without any plan to win the peace. It was just a big bad fairy tale. Wake up America, you and the world deserve far better. Time for regime change.

ON the other hand, though, didn't people ration their bread during World War II to support the troops? Who's doing the rationing these days? well, anyone who owns a hybrid or electrical car. Anyone who paid attention in World History should find it very easy to understand why much of the world hated Rome during its imperialist days. Why then is it sooo hard for citizens of this country to understand that our government has ALREADY made us the most hated country in the world, and we WILL go down, just like Rome, if we don't stop thinking with our raging hormones and emotions and realize that even WITH 9/11 our suffering has been a JOKE compared to what this government and its allies has unleashed on the poor and defenseless HUMAN BEINGS of this world? Bush reminds me of Claudius Caeser. Here is a quote from a site on Roman Emperors about him : "...there remained this Claudius, his uncle, who was now 51 years of age but who, as the butt of the family, had been excluded from the functions of the government, neglected, ill-treated, and allowed to divide his time between low company and literary studies. He was known as "Claudius, the Idiot or the Stutterer." No one had considered him a serious candidate..." Control your tempers people and turn on your brains.
